Trusts and Foundations
Orchid is very grateful for the many donations we receive each year from trusts and foundations. With over 50,000 men being diagnosed every year in the UK with testicular, prostate and penile cancer, there is a pressing need for Orchid’s work in helping even more men with cancer to get the information and support they need. Thanks to our supporters including trusts and foundation we provide the following services:
Educational campaigns and raising awareness of male cancer
Orchid raises awareness of male cancers and educates men in the signs and symptoms of cancer. We work closely with a schools, colleges, healthcare professionals, other voluntary organisations and support networks to ensure men are well informed. Through our Education Programme we are providing awareness talks to schools, colleges, companies and their employees, to raise awareness of male cancer.
Our campaigns such the annual Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week raise awareness of male cancers, improve understanding of the signs and symptoms of these diseases and highlight Orchid’s services for those affected. The Week has quickly become a recognised campaign in the healthcare diary and is featured in national, regional, local and trade media.
It is inspiring to think that over the last ten years we have been able to fund a variety of projects from raising awareness among teenagers about testicular cancer to encouraging older men to look out for signs of prostate cancer. It has been a wonderful partnership that we feel proud has helped thousands of people over the years. Jakki Brown, Co-Founder The Light Fund.
Orchid offers everyone affected by or interested in male cancer an extensive range of services. These include Orchid Male Cancer Information Nurse Specialists, a freephone National Male Cancer Helpline, a portfolio of publications, an award winning DVD ‘Know Your Balls-Check Em Out’, a dedicated website, testicular cancer microsite “Your Privates”, newsletter, Roadshows and a unique Community Golf Programme. Demand for specialist information and support is increasing year on year. In the last 12 months we have distributed over 400,000 items of free information.
Orchid’s two Male Cancer Nurse Specialists are on hand to guide and support not just men, but their partners, spouses and loved ones through all the different challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our Nurse Specialists bring with them over 31 years combined experience in genito-urinary cancer nursing.
The Big Lottery Fund is supporting Orchid with a 3 year grant towards our Male Cancer Nurse Specialists.
A pioneering, world class research programme
We are delighted to continue supporting Orchid’s research into prostate cancer to help thousands of men affected by this disease every year in the UK” Carole Cowin, President, The Isle of Man Anti Cancer Association
With incidents of male cancer on the increase, improving our understanding of prostate, testicular and penile cancer and finding new ways to treat and manage these cancers remains a priority. Our world class research programme aims to encourage, support and fund the highest quality research into the causes, prevention and treatment of male cancers. Orchid has made significant advances in cancer research and aims to discover the most effective treatments with the least side effects for men with male specific cancers. Since Orchid was founded in 1996, we have invested over £6 million in exceptional projects that are reviewed and approved by an eminent independent Scientific Advisory Board.
