Overcoming the Barriers to Engaging with Prostate Cancer

In March 2021, Orchid was delighted to have been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund to deliver a three-year project to help overcome the barriers to engaging with prostate cancer. This project launched on 4 May 2021 and will run until 3 May 2024.

End of Project Conference in Manchester - April 2024

Working in targeted locations, the focus of the project will be to support individuals from identified communities to overcome barriers to engaging with prostate cancer, including those additional barriers resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

Overcoming the Barriers to Engaging with Prostate Cancer will be delivered in Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Dudley, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Wolverhampton where Orchid will recruit and train Volunteer Community Champions to help cascade prostate cancer messages to those at high risk of this cancer.

If you work and/or live in one of these areas and are interested in becoming a Volunteer Community Champion for this project, please contact Julia De Petrillo, Project Manager at julia.depetrillo@orchid-cancer.org.uk. This is a great opportunity to make a real difference to those affected by or at risk of prostate cancer in your area! You will be a part of a dynamic team and community, learn new skills and take on a challenge!

Project Objectives

  • Identify and recruit a taskforce of patients, carers, community leaders and key healthcare professionals, to help direct and steer the project to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Identify, train and provide dedicated support to a cohort of Orchid Volunteer Community Champions to help cascade vital prostate cancer messages to those at high risk of this cancer in their communities.
  • Deliver two annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Conferences, supported by the Orchid Project Team, bringing together patients and their loved ones, Volunteer Community Champions and key healthcare professionals to receive vital information from experts in the field, share good practice/learning and receive opportunities for mutual support.
  • Offer a focused training programme for target healthcare professionals involved in providing care, such as sheltered housing, homeless health provision etc, and designed to assist them to better engage and support men.
